Hadith 4190

´It was narrated from Abu Dharr that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:` “I see what you do not see, and I hear what you do not hear. The heaven is creaking and it should creak, for there is no space in it the width of four fingers but there is an angel there, prostrating to Allah. By Allah, if you knew what I know, you would laugh little and weep much, and you would never enjoy women in your beds, and you would go out in the streets, beseeching Allah.’”

Explanation & Benefits

Benefits and Issues:

➊ Allah Ta'ala showed His Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) the conditions of Paradise, Hell, and the heavens; therefore, the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) possessed such a state of piety (taqwa) and fear of Allah that others cannot attain.

➋ Angels are the greatest creation of Allah Ta'ala, and because they are truly aware of Allah's greatness, they express utmost humility before Allah.

➌ Man is a weak and needy creation; thus, he is in greater need of awe (khashyah) and turning in repentance (inabah).

➍ Prostration (sujud) is also included in the worship of the angels, and it is the greatest act that brings a servant close to Allah.

➎ The requirement of fear of Allah is that, by realizing His greatness and reflecting on one's sins and weaknesses, remorse is produced, and one weeps before Allah and seeks His forgiveness.

➏ The sky is a very strong creation, but due to the awareness of Allah Ta'ala's greatness, such a sound is produced in it as is produced when a very heavy object is placed on a throne or saddle.

➐ The creaking of the sky is not against reason; therefore, there is no need for its interpretation.

➑ The last sentence of the hadith (wa-llahi law waddidtu... ta‘dud) "By Allah! I wish..." is interpolated (mudraj), meaning this sentence is not the noble statement of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), but rather the personal saying of Abu Dharr (radi Allahu anhu).

Commentary:
Note:
(In the hadith, the sentence (lawaddadtu ...) is not marfu‘ (attributed to the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam); it is the personal statement of Abu Dharr radi Allahu anhu.)
