´It was narrated that Ibn ‘Umar said:` “I had built a house to shelter me from the rain and the sun, during the time of Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ), and no creature of Allah helped me in building it.”
Explanation & Benefits
Maulana Ataullah Sajid
Benefits and Issues:
➊
The primary purpose of a house is protection from rain and sunlight, safeguarding one’s privacy, and maintaining modesty (purdah).
This benefit is obtained from even a simple house just as it is from decorated and beautiful mansions; therefore, spending beyond necessity is pointless.
➋
The noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum) would make the simplest arrangements for their personal needs, and would spend the rest of their wealth in the path of Allah and to help other Muslims. This simplicity is the true dignity of a Muslim.
➌
The fact that no one helped does not mean that the Companions (radi Allahu anhum) were unwilling to assist Ibn Umar (radi Allahu anhu); rather, it means that the house was so simple that he built it himself and did not feel the need to seek anyone’s help.
