Hadith 4146

حَدَّثَنَا نَصْرُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ , حَدَّثَنَا بِشْرُ بْنُ عُمَرَ , حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ , عَنْ سِمَاكٍ , عَنْ النُّعْمَانِ بْنِ بَشِيرٍ , قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ , يَقُولُ : رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " يَلْتَوِي فِي الْيَوْمِ مِنَ الْجُوعِ , مَا يَجِدُ مِنَ الدَّقَلِ مَا يَمْلَأُ بِهِ بَطْنَهُ " .
´It was narrated that Nu’man bin Bashir said:` “I heard ‘Umar bin Khattab say: ‘I saw the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) writhing with hunger during the day, and he could not even find the worst of dates with which to fill his stomach.’”

Brief Explanation
1؎: This was the condition of all nine wives, that for an entire month at a time their hearths would remain cold; they would subsist on dates and water. Sometimes, if a neighbor sent milk, the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) would drink it. SubhanAllah! He who is the King of all worlds, and the worldly kings and leaders of every era are but the servants of his servants, yet he lived in such a manner.

In this, there is a lesson for the Ummah that they should adopt patience in times of hardship, and not even entertain the thought of unlawful (haram) earnings in their hearts.
