Hadith 4112

´Abu Hurairah said:` “I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) saying: ‘This world is cursed and what is in it is cursed, except the remembrance of Allah (dhikr) and what is conducive to that, or one who has knowledge or who acquires knowledge.’”

Benefits and Issues:
(1)
The meaning of "curse" (la'nat) is being distant from and deprived of Allah's mercy; that is, since the world distracts one from the remembrance of Allah, it becomes a cause for this curse.

(2)
Every thing or action that, in any way, has a connection to the remembrance of Allah, upon it or because of it, mercy descends. Thus, recitation (tilawah), prayer (salah), sacrificing an animal for Allah, and the acts of Hajj and Umrah—all are causes of mercy.
Whoever performs such deeds remains protected from Allah's curse. Similarly, the Ka'bah, Safa and Marwah, Mina, Arafat, Muzdalifah, and every mosque and madrasa are places of Allah's mercy.
Serving the religion there, providing for the needs of those who serve the religion, printing religious books and delivering them to others, teaching them and acquiring knowledge, earning lawful (halal) livelihood with the intention of fulfilling the needs of scholars ('ulama) and students (tullab)—all these are means of Allah's mercy.

(3)
Being connected in any way to religious knowledge is a cause of Allah's mercy. Therefore, if worldly sciences and arts are also acquired with the intention of serving the religion, then due to being in service of the religion, they too will be excluded from the domain of the curse.
If there is no such intention, then these sciences will not be a cause of mercy.

(4)
Earning lawful (halal) livelihood is Allah's command; therefore, earning lawful livelihood in compliance with Allah's command and spending it in lawful matters is a meritorious deed.

Explanation:
1:
The meaning of the hadith is that the world and all things in the world which cause heedlessness from the remembrance of Allah are all accursed in the sight of Allah.
In other words, the curse is upon those things of the world which make one neglectful of the remembrance of Allah.
Excluded from this are those blessings and pleasures of the world which are free from this evil quality.
For example, wealth—if it is acquired through lawful (halal) means and spent on lawful expenditures, then it is good;
otherwise, this very wealth is bad and deserving of curse.
That knowledge is also good which brings the servants closer to Allah; otherwise, it too is bad.
From this hadith, the virtue of scholars and students of religious sciences is established.
