حَدَّثَنَا
يَحْيَى بْنُ حَكِيمٍ , حَدَّثَنَا

الْمَسْعُودِيُّ , أَخْبَرَنِي
عَمْرُو بْنُ مُرَّةَ , عَنْ
إِبْرَاهِيمَ , عَنْ
عَلْقَمَةَ , عَنْ
عَبْدِ اللَّهِ , قَالَ : اضْطَجَعَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَلَى حَصِيرٍ فَأَثَّرَ فِي جِلْدِهِ , فَقُلْتُ : بِأَبِي وَأُمِّي يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ , لَوْ كُنْتَ آذَنْتَنَا فَفَرَشْنَا لَكَ عَلَيْهِ شَيْئًا يَقِيكَ مِنْهُ , فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " مَا أَنَا وَالدُّنْيَا , إِنَّمَا أَنَا وَالدُّنْيَا كَرَاكِبٍ اسْتَظَلَّ تَحْتَ شَجَرَةٍ , ثُمَّ رَاحَ وَتَرَكَهَا " .
´It was narrated that ‘Abdullah said:` “The Prophet (ﷺ) lay down on a reed mat, and it left marks on his skin. I said: ‘May my father and mother be ransomed for you, O Messenger of Allah! If you had told us we would have provided you with something that would save you this trouble.’ The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: ‘What is there between myself and the world? This world and I are just like a rider who stops to rest beneath the shade of a tree then goes and leaves it.’”

Benefits and Issues:
➊ Simplicity in living arrangements is commendable.
➋ Abstaining from fine things, if done with the intention that the money saved will be spent in the way of Allah, is better; but if it is due to miserliness, then it is a bad habit. If a lawful thing is made unlawful for oneself, it is religiously prohibited.
➌ Zuhd (asceticism) means not being greedy for the blessings of the world; if something comes by lawful means without greed, it is not religiously prohibited to use it.
➌ Zuhd (asceticism) means not being greedy for the blessings of the world; if something comes by lawful means without greed, it may be used. Excessive formality and affectation are contrary to zuhd.
➍ The effect of preaching is greater when a practical example is presented of what is being invited to.
➎ Government officials should especially avoid a life of luxury so that more funds can be spent on the needs and welfare of the public.
