Hadith 4102

´It was narrated that Sahl bin Sa’d As-Sa’idi said:` “A man came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, show me a deed which, if I do it, Allah will love me and people will love me. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “Be indifferent towards this world, and Allah will love you. Be indifferent to what is in people’s hands, and they will love you.”

Benefits and Issues:

Our esteemed researcher has declared the mentioned narration weak in its chain of transmission, whereas other scholars have considered it authentic. Shaykh al-Albani rahimahullah has discussed this hadith in detail and mentioned its supporting narrations and corroborations, from which the opinion of the hadith’s authenticity appears closer to correctness. Therefore, despite the mentioned narration being weak in its chain, it is still actionable. And Allah knows best. For further details, see (al-Silsilah al-Sahihah 2/624, 628, no. 944). Asceticism (zuhd) does not mean that a person should isolate himself from the people of the world. This is monasticism, which is not the Islamic way. Zuhd means to be content with lawful (halal) earnings, even if they are little, and not to seek out unlawful (haram) means of income.

To hope that others will give something to you is an expression of greed. Independence from the wealth of others is included in zuhd and contentment (qana‘ah).

Having expectations from people makes a person humiliated, while contentment makes him beloved and honored in their eyes.

Hoping from Allah and seeking lawful sustenance is not contrary to zuhd.

One should continue to ask Allah for worldly needs along with the Hereafter, because the means are in His control, but the seeking of the Hereafter should be greater.

The chain of transmission in Ibn Majah is as follows:
Khalid bin Amr is a fabricator, therefore some hadith scholars have declared this hadith to be invalid. However, there is corroboration for it, and this hadith has also come through other chains which are not severely weak. In addition, there is also a mursal narration with a sound chain that serves as supporting evidence for it. For this reason, Shaykh al-Albani has declared it authentic in Sahih Ibn Majah, and in Silsilat al-Ahadith al-Sahihah (944) he has also mentioned its corroborating chains and supporting narrations in detail and declared it authentic.

Benefits:
➊ Renounce the world and Allah, exalted is He, will love you. What is the world? The simple and concise answer is: those things whose benefit is only in this world and not in the Hereafter, because those things whose benefit is in the Hereafter, or both in this world and the Hereafter, are considered as pertaining to the Hereafter, not the world. Therefore, the prescription for attaining Allah’s love is that a person should renounce all those things which will be of no use in the Hereafter. Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah, rahimahullah, said: «الزهد ترك ما لا ينفع فى الاخرة» Zuhd (asceticism) is to abandon those things which bring no benefit in the Hereafter.

➋ Renounce what is with people and people will love you. Because the person who asks from people or is greedy for what they possess, people dislike and detest him, since love of wealth has been placed in the hearts of humans by nature:
“Beautified for people is the love of that which they desire—of women and sons, heaped-up sums of gold and silver, fine branded horses, cattle and tilled land.”
So, how can people love someone who asks them for their beloved things? But if one becomes independent of their wealth and possessions, people honor and love him.

➌ A Bedouin asked the people, “Who is the leader of Basra?” The people replied, “Hasan al-Basri!” He asked, “How did he become their leader?” It was said, “The people are in need of his knowledge, and he is independent of their worldly possessions.”

➍ The desire for people’s love and striving to attain it is not a bad thing; rather, it is recommended, even obligatory, as the Messenger of Allah, sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, said: «والذي نفسي بيده لا تومنوا حتي تحابوا» “By Him in Whose hand is my soul, you will not believe until you love one another.” Then he, sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, explained the way to achieve this, saying: “Spread salam (greetings of peace) abundantly among yourselves.” Likewise, he encouraged giving gifts to foster mutual love.
