Hadith 4040

´It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:` “I and the Hour have been sent like these two,” and he held up his two fingers together.

Benefits and Issues:

➊ The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) is the last Prophet. Therefore, after him (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), only the Day of Judgment remains.

➋ This hadith is not contrary to the descent of ‘Isa (alayhis salam), because ‘Isa (alayhis salam) was appointed as a messenger before the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam). Although his descent from the heavens will occur later, at that time ‘Isa (alayhis salam) will be a proclaimer and inviter to the Prophethood of Muhammad (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), and he will implement and establish only the Shari‘ah of Muhammad (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).

➌ A Muslim should strive even more to protect his faith in this era of ever-increasing tribulations, and should make every possible effort against those who promote the beliefs and customs of ignorance (jahiliyyah).

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) described the nearness of the Hour (Qiyamah) in a figurative manner: just as these two fingers are joined together, with no gap between them, likewise there is no gap between me and the Hour.
(2)
The meaning of these ahadith is also that between me and the Hour, there is now no need for a new prophet, nor is there any interval between us.
My ummah is the last ummah upon which the Hour will be established, although the knowledge of the Hour is only with Allah Ta’ala.
The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) has only described its nearness, as is mentioned in the verse presented by Imam Bukhari rahimahullah.
