´It was narrated that Qais bin Abu Hazim said:` “Abu Bakr stood up and praised and glorified Allah, then he said: ‘O people, you recite this Verse – “O you who believe! Take care of your own selves. If you follow the (right) guidance no hurt can come to you from those who are in error.”[5:105] – but I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: ‘If people see some evil but do not change it, soon Allah will send His punishment upon them all.’” (One of the narrators) Abu Usamah repeated: "Indeed I heard that Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say."

Benefits and Issues:

Common people understand the mentioned verse to mean that if a person himself remains steadfast upon righteousness, then he has nothing to fear from the misguidance of others, nor will he be questioned about it; therefore, what need is there to prevent anyone from sin? Abu Bakr as-Siddiq radi Allahu anhu made it clear that the correct meaning of the verse is that you should safeguard yourself so that the misguidance of the misguided does not affect you as well. Continue to call people towards righteousness and prevent them from sins, otherwise you will be influenced by them and become misguided yourself. Furthermore, preventing people from evil is an essential part of remaining steadfast upon righteousness; negligence in this is a deviation from the path of righteousness, which can become a cause of Allah’s wrath.

The knowledge of the senior Companions radi Allahu anhum was broader and deeper.

In the sermon, one should clarify the misunderstandings found among the masses and present the correct understanding.
