Hadith 3996

حَدَّثَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ سَوَّادٍ الْمِصْرِيُّ , أَخْبَرَنِي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ وَهْبٍ , أَنْبَأَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ الْحَارِثِ , أَنَّ بَكْرَ بْنَ سَوَادَةَ حَدَّثَهُ , أَنَّ يَزِيدَ بْنَ رَبَاحٍ حَدَّثَهُ , عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ الْعَاصِ , عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ , أَنَّهُ قَالَ : " إِذَا فُتِحَتْ عَلَيْكُمْ خَزَائِنُ فَارِسَ , وَالرُّومِ أَيُّ قَوْمٍ أَنْتُمْ ؟ " , قَالَ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عَوْفٍ : نَقُولُ : كَمَا أَمَرَنَا اللَّهُ , قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " أَوْ غَيْرَ ذَلِكَ تَتَنَافَسُونَ , ثُمَّ تَتَحَاسَدُونَ , ثُمَّ تَتَدَابَرُونَ , ثُمَّ تَتَبَاغَضُونَ أَوْ نَحْوَ ذَلِكَ , ثُمَّ تَنْطَلِقُونَ فِي مَسَاكِينِ الْمُهَاجِرِينَ , فَتَجْعَلُونَ بَعْضَهُمْ عَلَى رِقَابِ بَعْضٍ " .
´It was narrated from ‘Abdullah bin ‘Amr bin ‘As that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:` “When the treasures of Persia and Rome are opened for you, what kind of people will you be?” ‘Abdur-Rahman bin ‘Awf said: “We will say what Allah has commanded us to say.” The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “Or something other than that. You will compete with one another, then you will envy one another, then you will turn your backs on one another, then you will hate one another, or something like that. Then you will go to the poor among the Muhajirun and appoint some of them as leaders of others.”

Benefits and Issues:

By "envy" here is meant competition for worldly wealth.
To desire that a certain blessing should come to me and not to another is unlawful envy.
This type of envy leads to jealousy, which is blameworthy.
Permissible envy means to wish that I also receive a blessing similar to what someone else has received.
This type of envy is permissible.


As a result of jealousy, relationships become strained and can even reach the point of enmity.
All such habits are reprehensible.


The meaning of the last sentence is that wealthy individuals will oppress and intimidate those who are less fortunate.
These qualities were not present among the noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum).
Such traits appeared among those who came later, in whom these characteristics were found.

Hadith Commentary: Benefits and Issues: Hazrat Uthman radi Allahu anhu, like Hazrat Umar radi Allahu anhu, considered Hajj Ifrad to be superior. The meaning of being fearful is that performing Tamattu‘ with the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was done on the basis of his command, so one should remain fearful even afterwards of disobeying his command. We were fearful of disobeying the command of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam; that is why we converted Hajj Ifrad into Hajj Tamattu‘. The fear of the enemy cannot be intended here, because Makkah had already been conquered and there was no longer any kind of fear remaining there.
