´‘Udaisah bint Uhban said:` “When ‘Ali bin Abu Talib came to Basrah, he entered upon my father and said: ‘O Abu Muslim, will you not help me against these people?’ He said: ‘Of course.’ So he called a slave woman of his and said: ‘O slave woman, bring me my sword.’ So she brought it, and he unsheathed it a span, and (I saw that) it was made of wood. He said: ‘My close friend and your cousin (ﷺ) advised me, if tribulation (Fitnah) arose among the Muslims, that I should take a sword of wood. If you wish I will go out with you.’ He said: ‘I have no need of you or of your sword.’”

1؎: And they were excused from fighting. The command of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam to make a wooden sword applies in the situation when there is turmoil (fitnah) among the Muslims and the truth and correctness are not clear; then it is better that a person remains silent and does not join any group.
Explanation & Benefits
Maulana Ataullah Sajid
Benefits and Issues: (1) A wooden sword cannot be used in battle. The purpose of having a wooden sword made is to remain apart from fighting and conflict.
(2) At the time of mutual disagreement among Muslims, instead of supporting one of the parties, it is more important to try to reconcile both sides.
