Hadith 3951

´It was narrated that Mu’adh bin Jabal said:` “The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) prayed one day, and made the prayer lengthy. When he finished we said (or they said): ‘O Messenger of Allah, you made the prayer lengthy today.’ He said: ‘I offered a prayer of hope and fear. I asked Allah for three things for my nation, and He granted me two and refused one. I asked Him not to let my nation be destroyed by enemies from without, and He granted me that. And I asked Him not to let them be destroyed by drowning, and He granted me that. And I asked Him not to let them be destroyed by fighting among themselves, but He refused that.’”

Explanation & Benefits
Maulana Ataullah Sajid
Benefits and Issues:

➊ The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) desired every kind of good for his ummah. We too should have utmost love for the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), send abundant salutations (salawat) upon him, follow him as much as possible, and avoid innovations (bid‘ah).

➋ The dominance of enemies refers to such an overpowering by non-Muslims that Muslims would be wiped out from the world.

➌ The acceptance of this supplication is evident in that, from the Prophetic era until today, there has never been a time when, somewhere in the world, an independent Muslim government did not exist. Furthermore, among those non-Muslims who occupied Muslim lands, Allah Ta‘ala raised from among them people who accepted Islam and defended it.

➍ The punishment of drowning refers to such a natural calamity by which all Muslims would be destroyed, for example: floods, earthquakes, storms, etc. Punishments will not come upon the ummah in the same way as they came upon previous nations, where the opponents of the truth were completely annihilated.

➎ Fighting and conflict among Muslims is not a good thing.

➏ The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was not all-powerful (mukhtar kull). Allah Ta‘ala did not accept some of his supplications.
