Maulana Ataullah Sajid
Benefits and Issues:
➊
Iman (faith) is related to safety; therefore, the characteristic of a believer is that people feel safe from him and there should be no kind of fear or danger from him. A believer is not dishonest, nor does he harm anyone’s wealth or life.
➋
“Hijrah” refers to leaving one’s homeland for the sake of Allah’s pleasure. Therefore, whoever leaves his homeland for Allah should also abandon sins for the sake of Allah’s pleasure, so that he may attain the elevated status of a muhajir (emigrant) in the sight of Allah.

Jurisprudence of the Hadith
➊ From this hadith, it is understood that fighting only against the disbelievers is not the sole form of jihad; rather, striving to keep one’s soul obedient to Allah and His Messenger and steadfast upon the Book and the Sunnah is also jihad. Striving against one’s own soul is more difficult than striving against distant disbelievers. Confrontation with disbelievers occurs only occasionally, whereas the soul is in constant opposition to a person. The soul says: “Stay sleeping in your warm bed, there is still plenty of time, you can pray later.” The soul says: “Count your wealth and store it in safes, do not spend it in the way of Allah, otherwise your wealth will decrease and you will become poor and needy,” and so on. Fortunate is the mujahid who strives against his own soul, constantly acts upon the Book and the Sunnah, and strives to please his Lord. See: [مرعاة المفاتيح ج1 ص104]
➋ Whoever migrates from the land of disbelief to the land of Islam, but then spends day and night opposing the Book and the Sunnah and engaging in nationalism, should not consider himself a true emigrant (muhajir). The true emigrant is the one who continuously avoids sins and disobedience, repents, and acts upon the Book and the Sunnah day and night, and encourages others to do so as well.
➌ It is explicitly stated in Musnad Ahmad that the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam delivered this blessed hadith on the occasion of the Farewell Pilgrimage (Hajjat al-Wada’). [مسند احمد 6؍21 وسندہ صحیح]
➍ This hadith clearly shows that faith (iman) consists of both statement and action. Shaykh Abdul-Muhsin al-Abbad al-Madani states:
“When the words Islam and Iman are mentioned together, there is a difference in their meanings... Islam refers to submitting and surrendering to Allah and obedience. Iman is interpreted as inward matters, and this is appropriate to its meaning. Iman is affirmation and acknowledgment (by heart, tongue, and action). When Islam and Iman are mentioned separately (individually), then both outward and inward meanings are intended.” [شرح حديث جبريل، عربي ص 17، اردو ترجمه از راقم الحروف ص24]
