´It was narrated from Abu ‘Ubaidullah Muslim bin Mishkam, that ‘Awf bin Malik narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:` “Dreams are of three types: Some are terrifying things from Satan, aimed at causing grief to the son of Adam; some are things that a person is concerned with when he is awake, so he sees them in his dreams; and some are a part of the forty-six parts of prophecy.” He said: “I said to him: ‘Did you hear this from the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)?’ He said: ‘Yes, I heard it from the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), I heard it from the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ).’”
Explanation & Benefits
Maulana Ataullah Sajid
1. Dreams shown by Allah through an angel are true, whether they are clear or require interpretation.
2. Just as Satan casts whispers into a person’s heart while awake, in the same way, during sleep he presents disturbing thoughts in the form of dreams.
3. The actions a person does during the day, or wishes to do but is unable to for some reason, such thoughts appear in the form of dreams during sleep. These do not require interpretation.
4. Modern psychology discusses only the third type of dreams. These people, due to their lack of belief in angels and devils, do not accept the first and second types, but the reality is that examples of these continue to appear.
5. The dreams of the noble Prophets (alayhimus-salam) are included in revelation (wahy), therefore they consist of certain (definite) matters.
