Hadith 3865

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بِشْرٍ بَكْرُ بْنُ خَلَفٍ , حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي عَدِيٍّ , عَنْ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ مَيْمُونٍ , عَنْ أَبِي عُثْمَانَ , عَنْ سَلْمَانَ , عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ , قَالَ : " إِنَّ رَبَّكُمْ حَيِيٌّ كَرِيمٌ , يَسْتَحْيِي مِنْ عَبْدِهِ أَنْ يَرْفَعَ إِلَيْهِ يَدَيْهِ , فَيَرُدَّهُمَا صِفْرًا أَوْ قَالَ خَائِبَتَيْنِ " .
´It was narrated from Salman that the :` Prophet (saas) said: "Your Lord is Kind and Most Generous, and is too kind to let His slave, if he raises his hands to Him, bring them back empty," or he said "frustrated."

Benefits and Issues:
➊ Allah Ta'ala accepts every supplication of the servant (provided there is no such reason present that becomes an obstacle in the way of acceptance). However, the effect of acceptance sometimes appears in this world and sometimes in the Hereafter.

➋ While making supplication (du'a), both hands should be raised.

➌ In this hadith, there is affirmation of the attribute of elevation ('uluww) of Allah Ta'ala, meaning that He, in His essence, is established above the Throne (Arsh), and is not present everywhere. However, His knowledge, His power, and His mercy encompass everything.

1488. Commentary: The modesty (haya) of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, is His special attribute. And it is as befits His Essence. Ahl al-Sunnah have faith in all the attributes of Allah, Most High. Delving into their details and true nature is neither correct nor permissible.

«أخرجه أبوداود، الصلاة، باب الدعاء حديث:1488، والترمذي، الدعوات، حديُ:3556، وابن ماجه، الدعاء، حديث:3865، والحاكم:1 /497 جعفر بن ميمون ضعّفه الجمهور، وللحديث شواهد ضعيفة.»©Explanation:
➊ The aforementioned narration has been declared weak in chain by our esteemed researcher, whereas in the verification of Sunan Ibn Majah (Urdu), it has been graded as hasan, and it is further written that the more correct opinion is that it is mawquf. Also, Shaykh al-Albani rahimahullah writes regarding it: « إِسْنَادُ الْمَوْقُوفِ أَصَحُّ» “The aforementioned narration, in terms of its chain, is more correct as mawquf.” However, he then also mentioned the marfu‘ supporting narrations for it, and at the end he wrote: «فَالْحَدِیثُ صَحِیحٌ قَطْعًا» “This hadith is absolutely authentic.” Therefore, the aforementioned narration is actionable based on other supporting evidences. ➋ From this hadith, it is understood that raising the hands while supplicating is permissible and is among the etiquettes of supplication.

➌ The hands of the needy servant, raised in the court of Allah, are not returned empty.

➍ At the time of the supplication for rain (du‘a al-istisqa’), the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam would raise both his hands higher than usual. In the hadith of Anas radi Allahu anhu, the negation of raising the hands for supplication refers to the negation of exaggeration in raising the hands as is done in istisqa’.
