Hadith 3857

حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ , حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ , عَنْ مَالِكِ بْنِ مِغْوَلٍ , أَنَّهُ سَمِعَهُ مِنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ بُرَيْدَةَ , عَنْ أَبِيهِ , قَالَ : سَمِعَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ , رَجُلًا يَقُولُ : اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ بِأَنَّكَ أَنْتَ اللَّهُ الْأَحَدُ الصَّمَدُ الَّذِي لَمْ يَلِدْ وَلَمْ يُولَدْ وَلَمْ يَكُنْ لَهُ كُفُوًا أَحَدٌ , فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " لَقَدْ سَأَلَ اللَّهَ بِاسْمِهِ الْأَعْظَمِ , الَّذِي إِذَا سُئِلَ بِهِ أَعْطَى , وَإِذَا دُعِيَ بِهِ أَجَابَ " .
´It was narrated from 'Abdullah bin Buraidah that his father said:` "The Prophet (saas) heard a man say: 'Allahumma! Inni as'aluka bi-annaka Antallahul-Ahadus-Samad, alladhi lam yalid wa lam yuwlud, wa lam yakun lahu kufuwan ahad (O Allah! I ask You by virtue of Your being Allah, the One, the Self-Sufficient Master, Who begets not nor was begotten, and there is none co-equal or comparable to Him).' The Messenger of Allah (saas) said: 'He has asked Allah by His Greatest Name, which if He is asked thereby He gives, and if He is called upon thereby He answers.'"

Benefits and Issues:

➊ In this supplication, the attributes of Allah mentioned are those described in Surah Al-Ikhlas, which, being a comprehensive statement of monotheism (tawhid), also encompass the meaning of (la ilaha illallah).

➋ Supplicating by means of Allah’s names and attributes is a cause for acceptance.

➌ Asking through the means and intercession of created beings is not established from the Noble Qur’an or authentic hadith, therefore, it should be avoided.

Explanation:
1:
O Allah! I ask You in such a way that I make You a witness to this matter: that You alone are Allah,
there is no deity worthy of worship except You,
You are alone (the only One worthy of worship), You are Self-Sufficient (As-Samad),
(You are not in need of anyone, all are in need of You) (You are so Self-Sufficient) that You have neither begotten anyone, nor were You begotten,
and there is none comparable to You.

1493. English Commentary:
➊ Supplicating (making du‘a) by means of Allah the Exalted’s Most Beautiful Names (al-asma’ al-husna) and Lofty Attributes (sifat ‘aliyah) is recommended (mustahabb), established by the Sunnah, and desirable. It is one form of the legislated (mashru‘) means (wasilah).
➋ All of Allah the Exalted’s Names are magnificent (‘azim). It is not permissible to differentiate between them or to give preference to one over another. This is the position held by Abu al-Hasan al-Ash‘ari, Abu Bakr Muhammad al-Baqillani, and others. According to them, “a‘zam” (greatest) is in the meaning of “azim” (magnificent). Ibn Hibban is of the opinion that here, “greatest” refers to an increase in reward and merit for the supplicant. Imam al-Tibi says: This hadith indicates that Allah, Exalted is He, has a Greatest Name (ism a‘zam), such that when supplication is made with it, Allah accepts it. [عون المعبود]
