Hadith 3856M

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ الدِّمَشْقِيُّ , حَدَّثَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ , قَالَ : ذَكَرْتُ ذَلِكَ لِعِيسَى بْنِ مُوسَى , فَحَدَّثَنِي أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ غَيْلَانَ بْنَ أَنَسٍ يُحَدِّثُ , عَنْ الْقَاسِمِ , عَنْ أَبِي أُمَامَةَ , عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ , نَحْوَهُ .
With this chain, it is also narrated from Abu Umamah in a marfu‘ form.

Benefits and Issues:

➊ Regarding the Greatest Name of Allah (Ism al-A’zam):
Imam Ibn Majah has narrated multiple hadiths about the Greatest Name (Ism al-A’zam) of Allah, stating that supplication made by means of this Name is accepted.

➋ In the acceptance of supplication, along with reciting the prescribed (masnun) supplications, the inner state of the supplicant plays a significant role.
The more hope one has in Allah, the more one expresses humility and submissiveness before Him, the greater one’s reliance (tawakkul) upon Him, and the more one observes the other etiquettes of supplication, the higher the likelihood of acceptance.

➌ For the acceptance of supplication, it is necessary that there be no impediment, such as:
unlawful (haram) sustenance, inattentive supplication that is uttered only by the tongue while the heart is not attentive, not praising Allah and not sending blessings (salat) upon the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), etc. In such cases, the blessings of the Ism al-A’zam do not manifest as hoped.

➍ Hafiz Ibn Hajar rahimahullah has mentioned fourteen opinions regarding the identification of the Ism al-A’zam.

From the verses and supplications containing the Ism al-A’zam mentioned in various hadiths, it appears that most likely the statement of tawhid (la ilaha illa Allah or la ilaha illa anta) itself is the Ism al-A’zam.
