Hadith 3833

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ , حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ نُمَيْرٍ , عَنْ مُوسَى بْنِ عُبَيْدَةَ , عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ ثَابِتٍ , عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ , قَالَ : كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ , يَقُولُ : " اللَّهُمَّ انْفَعْنِي بِمَا عَلَّمْتَنِي , وَعَلِّمْنِي مَا يَنْفَعُنِي , وَزِدْنِي عِلْمًا , وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ عَلَى كُلِّ حَالٍ , وَأَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ مِنْ عَذَابِ النَّارِ " .
´It was narrated that Abu Hurairah said:` "The Messenger of Allah (saas) used to say: 'Allahummanfa'ni bima 'allamtani, wa 'allimni ma yanfa'uni, wa zidni 'ilman, wal-hamdu lillahi 'ala kulli hal, wa a'udhu billahi min 'adhabin-nar (O Allah, benefit me by that which You have taught me, and teach me that which will benefit me, and increase me in knowledge. Praise is to Allah in all situations, and I seek refuge with Allah from the torment of the Fire).'"

Explanation:
1:
O Allah! Benefit me with the knowledge You have taught me, and teach me knowledge that will benefit me, and increase me in knowledge.
All praise is due to Allah in every circumstance, and I seek refuge with Allah from the condition of the inhabitants of Hell.
Note:
The phrase (al-hamdu lillah ... etc.) is not correct.
In the chain of narration, Muhammad ibn Thabit is a narrator whose status is unknown (majhool).
However, the first portion is authentic due to supporting evidence.

Our esteemed researcher has declared this narration weak in terms of its chain of transmission, and has further written that some portions of this hadith have supporting narrations (shawahid) in Al-Mustadrak of Al-Hakim, but he has not indicated their authenticity or weakness. Meanwhile, Shaykh al-Albani rahimahullah has declared the rest of the narration, except for the mentioned wording (وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ عَلَى كُلِّ حَالٍ), to be authentic.

In this, along with the request for the attainment of beneficial knowledge (‘ilm nafi‘), there is also a supplication that the knowledge already acquired may Allah make it beneficial as well.
