Hadith 3762

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ , حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحِيمِ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ , وَأَبُو أُسَامَةَ , عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ , عَنْ نَافِعٍ , عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ أَبِي هِنْدٍ , عَنْ أَبِي مُوسَى , قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " مَنْ لَعِبَ بِالنَّرْدِ , فَقَدْ عَصَى اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ " .
´It was narrated that Abu Musa said:` "The Messenger of Allah(ﷺ) said: 'Whoever plays backgammon has disobeyed Allah and His Messenger.'"

Our esteemed researcher has declared the mentioned narration to be weak in its chain of transmission (isnad), and has further written that the narration of Sahih Muslim suffices for it.
In addition, the forthcoming narration also supports it, and other researchers have also deemed it hasan (good). Therefore, despite the mentioned narration being weak in its chain, on the basis of other supporting evidences, it is authoritative and actionable.

➊ The translation of (nard) is (lu‘bat al-tawila), meaning a game played on a wooden board, by which games like chess, carrom board, and ludo, etc., can be intended.

➋ Our esteemed researcher, while investigating the aforementioned narration, writes that this narration is weak in its chain of transmission, but the hadith number 12260 of Sahih Muslim suffices for this narration. Therefore, it is understood that this narration is, in meaning, a valid proof. Furthermore, Shaykh al-Albani rahimahullah has also declared the above-mentioned narration to be hasan (good).
