حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ , حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ إِدْرِيسَ , عَنْ دَاوُدَ , عَنْ الشَّعْبِيِّ , عَنْ أَبِي جَبِيرَةَ بْنِ الضَّحَّاكِ , قَالَ : فِينَا نَزَلَتْ مَعْشَرَ الْأَنْصَارِ وَلا تَنَابَزُوا بِالأَلْقَابِ سورة الحجرات آية 11 ، " قَدِمَ عَلَيْنَا النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ , وَالرَّجُلُ مِنَّا لَهُ الِاسْمَانِ وَالثَّلَاثَةُ , فَكَانَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ رُبَّمَا دَعَاهُمْ بِبَعْضِ تِلْكَ الْأَسْمَاءِ " , فَيُقَالُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ , إِنَّهُ يَغْضَبُ مِنْ هَذَا , فَنَزَلَتْ وَلا تَنَابَزُوا بِالأَلْقَابِ سورة الحجرات آية 11 .
´It was narrated that Abu Jabirah bin Dahhak said:` "(Allah's saying) "Nor insult one another by nicknames(Surah Al Hujarat 49:11)" was revealed concerning us, the Ansar. When the Prophet(ﷺ) came to us, a man among us would have two or three names, and the Prophet(ﷺ) might call him by one of those names, only to be told: "O Messenger of Allah(ﷺ), he does not like that name." Then:"Nor insult one another by nicknames." was revealed."

Brief Explanation
1؎: That is, do not call with bad nicknames by which a person is displeased, because this causes harm to your Muslim brother. Some have said that this verse was revealed regarding Safiyyah radi Allahu anha. She came to the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam and said: "O Messenger of Allah! People call me: O Jewess, daughter of the Jews." The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: "Why did you not say: My father is Harun alayhis salam, my uncle is Musa alayhis salam, and my husband is Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. May Allah's mercy descend upon them and peace be upon all of them."

Tirmidhi — Hadith 3268
´Narrated Abu Jubairah bin Ad-Dahhak:` "A man among us would be known by two or three names. He would be called by one that perhaps he disliked, so this Ayah was revealed: Nor insult with nicknames (49:11)."

Abu Dawud — Hadith 4962
Narrated Abu Jubayrah ibn ad-Dahhak: This verse was revealed about us, the Banu Salimah: "Nor call each other by (offensive) nicknames: ill-seeming is a name connoting wickedness (to be used of one) after he has believed. " He said: When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to us, every one of us had two or three names. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ began to say: O so and so! But they would say: Keep silence, Messenger of Allah! He becomes angry by this name. So this verse was revealed: "Nor call each other by (offensive) nicknames. "
