Hadith 3733

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ , حَدَّثَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ مُوسَى , حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ , عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ , عَنْ نَافِعٍ , عَنْ ابْنِ عُمَرَ , أَنَّ ابْنَةً لِعُمَرَ كَانَ يُقَالُ لَهَا : عَاصِيَةُ ، " فَسَمَّاهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ جَمِيلَةَ " .
´It was narrated from Ibn Umar that:` "a daughter of 'Umar was Asiyah(disobedient) then the Messenger of Allah(ﷺ) named her 'Jamilah' (beautiful)."

Benefits and Issues:
The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) forbade three types of names:
➊ Those whose meanings are objectionable,
such as ‘Asiyah’,
meaning disobedient,
whereas disobedience does not befit a Muslim,
let alone naming someone disobedient.
➋ Names from which there is a fear of bad omen,
while taking bad omens is not permissible,
such as Aflah,
Najeeh, and Yasar, etc.
➌ Names in which self-praise and self-purification are presented,
such as Barrah,
meaning loyal,
obedient,
even though this also falls under the second category and there is a fear of bad omen in the case of negation.

The Arabs used to name (their children) ‘Aas’ and ‘Aasiyah’.
By these names, they intended (the meaning of) one who rejects oppression, transgression, and evil.
