Chapter: Wearing the skins of dead animals when they have been tanned

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ , حَدَّثَنَا خَالِدُ بْنُ مَخْلَدٍ , عَنْ مَالِكِ بْنِ أَنَسٍ , عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ قُسَيْطٍ , عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ , عَنْ أُمِّهِ , عَنْ عَائِشَةَ , قَالَتْ : أَمَرَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " أَنْ يُسْتَمْتَعَ بِجُلُودِ الْمَيْتَةِ إِذَا دُبِغَتْ " .
´It was narrated that ‘Aishah said:` “The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) commanded that use should be made of the skins of dead animals, if they were tanned.”

Explanation & Benefits
Abu Dawud — Hadith 4124
Narrated Aishah, Ummul Muminin: The Prophet ﷺ ordered that the skins of the animals which had died a natural death should be used when they are tanned.

Benefits and Issues:
If a lawful (halal) animal dies (i.e., becomes a carcass), its skin becomes pure by tanning.

Nasai — Hadith 4249
´It was narrated that 'Aishah said:` "The Prophet was asked about the hides of dead animals." He said: "Tanning it purifies it."

Commentary:
Tanning can be done with anything that removes the moisture from the hide and eliminates the odor.

Nasai — Hadith 4257
´It was narrated from 'Aishah that:` the Messenger of Allah ordered that the hides of dead animals be made use of if they had been tanned. (Daif)

(1) The verifier of the book has declared the mentioned narration to be weak in its chain of transmission; however, this narration, on the basis of other supporting evidences and corroborations, is reliable and actionable. For details, see: (al-Mawsu‘ah al-Hadithiyyah, Musnad al-Imam Ahmad: 504/40 and Dhakheerat al-‘Uqba Sharh Sunan al-Nasa’i: 46, 34/33).

(2) “He commanded” means he granted permission and concession. It is possible that the command itself is intended, because permission to waste wealth is not given.
