´It was narrated that Salman said:` “One of the Mothers of the Believers had a sheep that died. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) passed by it and said: ‘It would not have harmed its owners if they had made use of its hide.’”
Explanation & Benefits
Maulana Ataullah Sajid
Benefits and Issues:
➊ The animal whose meat is lawful (halal) to eat—if it dies, then its skin may be removed, tanned, and made into any item for use; this is permissible.
➋ Some scholars, in light of the previous hadith: 3609, state that the skin of an animal whose meat is not lawful to eat also becomes pure through tanning.
And according to some scholars, the skins of animals whose meat is not eaten do not become pure through tanning.
However, the correct and preferred position appears to be that only the skins of animals whose meat is lawful (makul al-lahm) become pure through tanning.
And Allah knows best.
