Hadith 358

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ وَعَلِيُّ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ قَالَا : حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ ، عَنْ شَرِيكٍ ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ جَرِيرٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي زُرْعَةَ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ جَرِيرٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ : " أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَضَى حَاجَتَهُ ، ثُمَّ اسْتَنْجَى مِنْ تَوْرٍ ، ثُمَّ دَلَكَ يَدَهُ بِالْأَرْضِ " .
´It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that:` The Prophet relieved himself, then he cleaned himself (with water) from a pot made of brass, then he wiped his hand on the ground. Another chain with similar wording.

Brief Explanation
1؎ : From these hadiths, it is understood that after relieving oneself, it is Sunnah to rub the hands with soil and then wash them. The purpose is the cleanliness and purification of the hands, which can be achieved by using soil, soap, or similar substances.

Commentary:
Rubbing the hands on earth and then washing them results in greater cleanliness.
Nowadays, using soap and similar substances for this purpose is also permissible; however, it is not obligatory.
Simply washing the hands with water is also sufficient.
