Hadith 3562

´It was narrated from Abu Burdah that his father said to him:` “O my son, if only you could have seen us when we were with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), when rain fell on us; you would have thought that we smelled like sheep.”

Benefits and Issues:
➊ The mentioned narration has been declared weak in chain (sanad) by our esteemed researcher, whereas other scholars have deemed it authentic based on other supporting evidences and corroborations, and their opinion appears to be closer to correctness. For further details, see: (al-Mawsu‘ah al-Hadithiyyah, Musnad al-Imam Ahmad: 32/420, 421; Sahih Sunan Ibn Majah by al-Albani, no. 2338; Sunan Ibn Majah, edited by Dr. Bashar ‘Awwad, no. 3562).
The Arabs were not familiar with the art of preparing wool in the manner it is prepared nowadays, where fine and smooth threads are produced from it. Rather, they would prepare a coarse thread in a simple manner, and the cloth made from it would also be thick and rough. Therefore, cotton garments were fine and expensive, while woolen clothing was coarse and cheap.

➌ The noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum) did not care for luxury and comfort. They themselves sufficed with simple food and clothing, while spending generously in the way of Allah.

➍ When one does not have the means for fine clothing, one should be patient with woolen garments, and instead of complaining to Allah, one should focus on the protection of faith and religion.
