Hadith 354

حَدَّثَنَا هَنَّادُ بْنُ السَّرِيِّ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْأَحْوَصِ ، عَنْ مَنْصُورٍ ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، عَنْ الْأَسْوَدِ ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ ، قَالَتْ : " مَا رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ خَرَجَ مِنْ غَائِطٍ قَطُّ إِلَّا مَسَّ مَاءً " .
´It was narrated that 'Aishah said:` "I never saw the Messenger of Allah come out of the toilet without first (cleansing himself) with water."

Commentary:
(1)
From this it is understood that the regular practice of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) at home was to perform istinja (purification after relieving oneself) with water, because this provides greater and better cleanliness.

(2)
Outside the home, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) would generally perform istinja with stones (pebbles). However, at times he would also take water outside.

According to some scholars, this narration is authentic.
