Hadith 3530

حَدَّثَنَا أَيُّوبُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الرَّقِّيُّ , حَدَّثَنَا مُعَمَّرُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ , حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ بِشْرٍ , عَنْ الْأَعْمَشِ , عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ مُرَّةَ , عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ الْجَزَّارِ , عَنْ ابْنِ أُخْتِ زَيْنَبَ امْرَأَةِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ , عَنْ زَيْنَبَ , قَالَتْ : كَانَتْ عَجُوزٌ تَدْخُلُ عَلَيْنَا تَرْقِي مِنَ الْحُمْرَةِ , وَكَانَ لَنَا سَرِيرٌ طَوِيلُ الْقَوَائِمِ , وَكَانَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ إِذَا دَخَلَ تَنَحْنَحَ وَصَوَّتَ , فَدَخَلَ يَوْمًا فَلَمَّا سَمِعَتْ صَوْتَهُ احْتَجَبَتْ مِنْهُ , فَجَاءَ فَجَلَسَ إِلَى جَانِبِي فَمَسَّنِي فَوَجَدَ مَسَّ خَيْطٍ , فَقَالَ : مَا هَذَا ؟ فَقُلْتُ : رُقًى لِي فِيهِ مِنَ الْحُمْرَةِ , فَجَذَبَهُ وَقَطَعَهُ فَرَمَى بِهِ , وَقَالَ : لَقَدْ أَصْبَحَ آلُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ أَغْنِيَاءَ عَنِ الشِّرْكِ , سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ , يَقُولُ : " إِنَّ الرُّقَى وَالتَّمَائِمَ وَالتِّوَلَةَ شِرْكٌ " , قُلْتُ : فَإِنِّي خَرَجْتُ يَوْمًا فَأَبْصَرَنِي فُلَانٌ فَدَمَعَتْ عَيْنِي الَّتِي تَلِيهِ , فَإِذَا رَقَيْتُهَا سَكَنَتْ دَمْعَتُهَا وَإِذَا تَرَكْتُهَا دَمَعَتْ , قَالَ : ذَاكِ الشَّيْطَانُ إِذَا أَطَعْتيِهِ تَرَكَكِ , وَإِذَا عَصَيْتِيِهِ طَعَنَ بِإِصْبَعِهِ فِي عَيْنِكِ , وَلَكِنْ لَوْ فَعَلْتِ كَمَا فَعَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ , كَانَ خَيْرًا لَكِ وَأَجْدَرَ أَنْ تُشْفَيْنَ تَنْضَحِينَ فِي عَيْنِكِ الْمَاءَ , وَتَقُولِينَ : " أَذْهِبْ الْبَاسْ رَبَّ النَّاسْ , اشْفِ أَنْتَ الشَّافِي , لَا شِفَاءَ إِلَّا شِفَاؤُكَ , شِفَاءً لَا يُغَادِرُ سَقَمًا " .
´It was narrated that Zainab said:` “There was an old woman who used to enter upon us and perform Ruqyah from erysipelas: Contagious disease which causes fever and leaves a red coloration of the skin. We had a bed with long legs, and when ‘Abdullah entered he would clear his throat and make noise. He entered one day and when she heard his voice she veiled herself from him. He came and sat beside me, and touched me, and he found a sting. He said: ‘What is this?’ I said: ‘An amulet against erysipelas.’ He pulled it, broke it and threw it away, and said: ‘The family of ‘Abdullah has no need of polytheism.’ I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: “Ruqyah (i.e., which consist of the names of idols and devils etc.), amulets and Tiwalah (charms) are polytheism.’” “I said: ‘I went out one day and so-and-so looked at me, and my eye began to water on the side nearest him. When I recited Ruqyah for it, it stopped, but if I did not recite Ruqyah it watered again.’ He said: ‘That is Satan, if you obey him he leaves you alone but if you disobey him he pokes you with his finger in your eye. But if you do what the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to do, that will be better for you and more effective in healing. Sprinkle water in your eye and say: Adhhibil-bas Rabban-nas, washfi Antash-Shafi, la shifa’a illa shafi’uka, shafi’an la yughadiru saqaman (Take away the pain, O Lord of mankind, and grant healing, for You are the Healer, and there is no healing but Your healing that leaves no trace of sickness).’”

Benefits and Issues:


It is permissible to recite verses of the Qur’an or prescribed supplications (du‘a) and perform blowing (dam) over a sick person.
However, dam involving shirk (polytheistic practices) is forbidden.


Women can perform dam (blowing with supplications) for other women.


A man should announce his arrival at home—by making a sound, coughing, or giving salam—so that if a non-mahram woman is present for some reason, she may observe proper covering (hijab).


Elderly women should also observe hijab.
However, very old women whose physical attraction has ended and who do not adorn themselves, for them it is permissible not to observe hijab. (Surah An-Nur: 60)


It is prohibited to blow (dam) over a thread and wear it around the neck, or to tie it on the arm, waist, etc.


Removing and discarding a thread or amulet (ta‘wiz) worn around the neck is not disrespect to sacred words, but rather an expression of disapproval of a wrong action.

➐ (Tolah – “Love charm”)
This is a type of magic.
In the time of ignorance (Jahiliyyah), the Arabs believed that as a result of this, love would be created in a husband’s heart for his wife.


To create love in the husband’s heart, instead of resorting to charms and spells, it is better to obey him, respect him, serve him, and express love to him.


Sometimes, apparent benefit is seen from polytheistic charms.
In reality, this is a satanic effect, so that people’s belief in such practices becomes firm.


Clean water is good for cleansing the eyes.
However, one should not splash water into the eyes with force.


The effect of the evil eye (nazar) is also a satanic effect.
Its remedy is supplication to Allah and prescribed dam (blowing with supplications).


Our researcher has declared the mentioned narration weak, while other researchers have considered it authentic, and have mentioned its supporting evidences, etc.
They have also discussed it at length.
From this, it is understood that although the mentioned narration is weak in its chain, due to other supporting evidences, it is actionable and a valid proof.

Khumrah is a skin disease.
In addition to redness at the affected area, the fever becomes severe.
Some scholars have interpreted this as referring to measles and similar diseases.

Benefits and Issues:
➊ Ruqyah, meaning incantation, blowing, or reciting over someone, is prohibited and considered shirk (polytheism) if it involves words of disbelief or polytheism. However, performing ruqyah with verses from the Noble Qur’an and prescribed supplications (duas) is Sunnah and a source of reward. Likewise, using words in which there is no suspicion of shirk or disbelief, and which have been proven beneficial through experience, is permissible for ruqyah.

➋ The beads that the Arabs used to put on their children to protect them from the evil eye were called tameemah and tama’im. This includes all such items—shells, beads, stones, iron, rings, wood, threads, etc.—that ignorant people would wear or make others wear for the purpose of healing. This also includes those amulets (ta‘wiz) that contain writings of disbelief, polytheism, or are otherwise un-Islamic. However, amulets that contain Qur’anic verses or prescribed supplications should not be called tameemah, as this would be a disrespect to the Qur’an and Sunnah. To give such pure words this bad name is undue extremism. There is no doubt that hanging Qur’anic verses or supplications as amulets is not established from the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) in any way, even though in his time paper, pen, ink, and scribes were all available, and patients would come to the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), yet he never prescribed this method of treatment. He (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) would perform ruqyah on them, teach them various adhkar (remembrances), or prescribe some material treatment. Hanging verses or supplications as amulets is a later development and a matter of scholarly disagreement. One group of the scholars of the Sunnah has accepted and practiced it, while another has rejected it (see the upcoming hadith 3893). The preference of the firmly grounded scholars and our own is that it should be avoided. However, to give the words of Allah or prescribed supplications the bad name of tameemah is a great injustice.

➌ Love charms, amulets, and talismans are a type of magic and are shirk (polytheism).

➍ From the statement of Abdullah ibn Mas‘ud (radi Allahu anhu), it is also understood that any benefit people receive from polytheistic or disbelief-based methods is, in reality, a satanic effect.

➎ It is obligatory for every Muslim to adopt prescribed (masnun) actions with faith and certainty, and to believe that healing will come sooner or later. If it does not, one should carefully examine oneself to see what is preventing the acceptance of supplication, and then exercise patience, hoping for reward and elevation of ranks with Allah.
