Hadith 3509

حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامُ بْنُ عَمَّارٍ , حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ , عَنْ الزُّهْرِيِّ , عَنْ أَبِي أُمَامَةَ بْنِ سَهْلِ بْنِ حُنَيْفٍ , قَالَ : مَرَّ عَامِرُ بْنُ رَبِيعَةَ , بِسَهْلِ بْنِ حُنَيْفٍ وَهُوَ يَغْتَسِلُ , فَقَالَ : لَمْ أَرَ كَالْيَوْمِ وَلَا جِلْدَ مُخَبَّأَةٍ , فَمَا لَبِثَ أَنْ لُبِطَ بِهِ , فَأُتِيَ بِهِ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقِيلَ لَهُ : أَدْرِكْ سَهْلًا صَرِيعًا , قَالَ : " مَنْ تَتَّهِمُونَ بِهِ ؟ " , قَالُوا : عَامِرَ بْنَ رَبِيعَةَ , قَالَ : " عَلَامَ يَقْتُلُ أَحَدُكُمْ أَخَاهُ ، إِذَا رَأَى أَحَدُكُمْ مِنْ أَخِيهِ مَا يُعْجِبُهُ , فَلْيَدْعُ لَهُ بِالْبَرَكَةِ " , ثُمَّ دَعَا بِمَاءٍ , فَأَمَرَ عَامِرًا أَنْ يَتَوَضَّأَ , فَيَغْسِلْ وَجْهَهُ وَيَدَيْهِ إِلَى الْمِرْفَقَيْنِ , وَرُكْبَتَيْهِ وَدَاخِلَةَ إِزَارِهِ , وَأَمَرَهُ أَنْ يَصُبَّ عَلَيْهِ , قَالَ سُفْيَانُ : قَالَ مَعْمَرٌ : عَنْ الزُّهْرِيِّ : وَأَمَرَهُ أَنْ يَكْفَأَ الْإِنَاءَ مِنْ خَلْفِهِ .
´It was narrated that Abu Umamah bin Sahl bin Hunaif said:` “ ‘Amir bin Rabi’ah passed by Sahl bin Hunaif when he was having a bath, and said: ‘I have never seen such beautiful skin.’ Straightaway, he (Sahl) fell to the ground. He was brought to the Prophet (ﷺ) and it was said: ‘Sahl has had a fit.’ He said: ‘Whom do you accuse with regard to him?’ They said: “ ‘Amir bin Rabi’ah.’ They said: ‘Why would anyone of you kill his brother? If he sees something that he likes, then let him pray for blessing for him.’ Then he called for water, and he told ‘Amir to perform ablution, then he washed his face and his arms up to the elbows, his knees and inside his lower garment, then he told him to pour the water over him.”

Benefits and Issues:

If something appears pleasing, one should supplicate for blessing (barakah) in it.
For example: “May Allah grant you blessing in this animal,”
or, “O Allah, grant blessing in your strength and beauty,”
or one may say: “Masha’Allah la quwwata illa billah” ().
By the blessing of this, the evil eye does not affect.

Another method to remove the effect of the evil eye is as follows:
If someone has been afflicted by the evil eye, then according to the method mentioned in the hadith under discussion, the person whose eye has affected should wash his limbs in a vessel, and that water should be given so that it may be poured over the patient from behind.

What is meant by the inner part of the lower garment (tehband)? There is a difference of opinion regarding this.
Some have said it refers to that edge of the lower garment which is concealed by the other edge,
and it refers to that part which hangs down below.
Imam Nawawi rahimahullah has said it is the right end of the lower garment. (Sharh Sahih Muslim by Nawawi: 14/172)
Some have taken it to mean the private part, and some have taken it to mean the part of the body where the lower garment or similar is tied. (Fath al-Bari, Book of Medicine, 10/252)
