Hafiz Muhammad Ameen
(1) The ruling regarding something edible or a vessel into which a fly falls is that neither the item nor the vessel becomes impure, because the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) commanded concerning the fly that it should be immersed, and then the immersed fly should be thrown out.
(2) From this hadith, it is also understood that whether the fly is alive or dead, it is pure.
(3) “By immersing it”—there is a possibility that the fly may die as a result of immersion. It is thus understood that if a fly or similar creature (which does not contain a large amount of blood) dies, the drink does not become impure.
(4) In other narrations from the truthful and trustworthy Messenger (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), these words also appear: that in one wing of the fly there is disease and in the other there is cure. And when the fly falls into something, it first touches with the wing that contains disease, so you should immerse the other wing as well, so that the cure accompanies the disease. (Sahih al-Bukhari, Book of the Beginning of Creation, Hadith: 3320, and Sunan Abi Dawud, Book of Foods, Hadith: 3844)
(5) Some individuals have objected to this hadith, saying that the fly sits on filthy things and thus spoils edible items, so immersing the fly would cause further harm. These objectors should know that, despite all their efforts, they cannot avoid flies nor remain safe from their harm. The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), in his perfect kindness, prescribed a remedy for this—so what is wrong with that? As for the matter that in one wing there is disease and in the other cure, this is not surprising. In the honeybee, there is both honey and venom. Among animals, there is both milk and dung. Furthermore, it is an observed fact that if a wasp or similar insect stings, rubbing it on the same spot on the body removes the venom. Why not accept the statement of a true Prophet with a sincere heart? May my soul and spirit be sacrificed for him (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).
