حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو سَلَمَةَ يَحْيَى بْنُ خَلَفٍ , حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَاصِمٍ , حَدَّثَنِي عُثْمَانُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ , قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ سَالِمَ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ يُحَدِّثُ , عَنْ أَبِيهِ , قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " عَلَيْكُمْ بِالْإِثْمِدِ , فَإِنَّهُ يَجْلُو الْبَصَرَ وَيُنْبِتُ الشَّعَرَ " .
´Salim bin ‘Abdullah narrated that his father said:` “The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: ‘You should use antimony, for it improves the eyesight and makes the hair (eyelashes) grow.’”

Benefits and Issues:
➊ Ithmid is a type of kohl (antimony-based eye cosmetic).
Allamah Waheed uz-Zaman Khan has identified it as Isfahani kohl.
➋ Kohl (surma) is not only an adornment for the eyes but also strengthens the eyesight.
➌ Long eyelashes beautify the eyes and also protect them from foreign objects.
By using ithmid, these benefits are attained, and along with that, one also gains the reward of acting upon the instruction of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).
