´Muhammad bin ‘Abdur-Rahman bin Sa’d bin Zurarah Al-Ansari said:` “I heard my paternal uncle Yahya – and I have not seen a man among us like him – tell the people that Sa'd bin Zurarah, who was the grandfather of Muhammad through his mother, was suffering from pain in his throat, known as croup. The Prophet (ﷺ) said: ‘I shall do my best for Abu Umamah.’ Such that I will be excused (i.e., free of blame if he is not healed). And he cauterized him with his own hand, but he died. The Prophet (ﷺ) said: ‘May the Jews be doomed! They will say: “Why could he not avert death from his Companions?” But I have no power to do anything for him or for my own self.’”

Brief Explanation
1؎: For As‘ad bin Zurarah or Sa‘d bin Zurarah, see: Tuhfat al-Ashraf and al-Isabah.
2؎: As‘ad bin Zurarah was a chief of the Ansar and a great, complete believer. The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) did everything possible to treat him, but no one has any power over death. Even the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) did not have the authority to prevent someone’s death when it came. However, the Jews, who were faithless from the beginning, found an opportunity to say that if he were a true Messenger, he would have warded off death from his companion. The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) refuted them and said: “What connection does the Messenger have with this? I do not even have control over my own soul, so how could I have control over another’s soul?” And it is regrettable that the Jews did not even understand that all the previous Prophets and Messengers, when their time of death came, passed away. In fact, Harun (alayhis salam), who was the brother of Musa (alayhis salam), died during the lifetime of Musa (alayhis salam), and Musa (alayhis salam) could not save him. Can anyone prevent the command of Allah? Whether a saint or a Prophet, all are helpless servants and slaves before Allah Ta‘ala.

Benefits and Issues: ➊ “Dhabh” (ذبح) is pronounced with a “dhal” having a dammah (u-sound) and a “ba” with either a kasrah (i-sound) or sukun (no vowel). This refers to a pain or wound that occurs in the throat, and the chances of survival for a patient suffering from it are very slim.
➋ One should make every possible effort to treat the patient, so that the thought does not arise in the heart that if treatment had been sought, perhaps the patient would not have died from this illness.
➌ Life and death are solely in the control of Allah. Even the Noble Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) does not have authority over anyone’s life or death.
➍ Shaykh al-Albani rahimahullah has also graded the mentioned narration as “hasan” (good) except for the phrase (ميتة سوء... “an evil death...”) — “May the Jews be afflicted with an evil death”— the rest of the narration is considered hasan. See: (Da‘if Sunan Ibn Majah, no. 764)
