Hadith 3446

´It was narrated from ‘Aishah that the Prophet (ﷺ) said:` “You should eat the beneficial thing that is unpleasant to eat: Talbinah,” meaning broth. If any member of the family of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was sick, the cooking pot would remain on the fire until one of two things happened, either the person recovered or died.

Benefits and Issues:

➊ The explanation of talbinah is as follows:
It is a thin (liquid) food that is made from flour or bran (the husk of flour).
Sometimes honey is also added to it. (Al-Nihayah, under the root word "l-b-n")

➋ Nawab Waheeduz Zaman Khan has translated it as "harirah."
He has explained it as follows:
Hisa’ is that food which is made from flour, water, and oil.
Sometimes sweetness is also added to it, and sometimes honey; sometimes, instead of flour, bran is used.
This is called talbinah.
And in Hindi, it is known as harirah. (Translation of Sunan Ibn Majah, commentary on this hadith)

➌ In Feroz-ul-Lughat Urdu, the meaning of harirah is stated as follows:
A sweet and thick thing which is made by dissolving fine flour (maida) in sugar and cooking it.

➍ Encouragement for talbinah is also found in other authentic ahadith.
It is narrated from Umm al-Mu’minin, Hazrat Aisha radi Allahu anha:
The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said:
Talbinah gives comfort to the heart of the sick and lessens grief. (Sahih Bukhari, Book of Medicine, Chapter: Soothing the sick with talbinah, Hadith: 5689; and Sahih Muslim, Book of Peace, Chapter: Talbinah as a comfort for the heart of the sick, Hadith: 2216)

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
In one hadith, it is mentioned that when there was a sick person in the house, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) would order that talbinah be prepared and would say:
“It gives comfort to the heart of the grieving person, and it removes sorrow from the heart of the sick person just as a woman removes dirt from her face with water.”
(Jami‘ at-Tirmidhi, Book of Medicine, Hadith: 3445)
(2)
In any case, it has many benefits.
There is much encouragement for its use in the ahadith.
