Hadith 3436

´It was narrated that Usamah bin Sharik said:` “I saw the Bedouins asking the Prophet (ﷺ): ‘Is there any harm in such and such, is there any harm in such and such?’ He said to them: ‘O slaves of Allah! Allah has only made harm in that which transgresses the honor of one’s brother. That is what is sinful.’ They said: ‘O Messenger of Allah! Is there any sin if we do not seek treatment?’ He said: ‘Seek treatment, O slaves of Allah! For Allah does not create any disease but He also creates with it the cure, except for old age.’ They said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, what is the best thing that a person may be given?’ He said: ‘Good manners.’”

Benefits and Issues:

This is a manifestation of the noble character of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), that he would tolerate the inappropriate behavior of those newly entering Islam with a cheerful countenance.

The rulings of Islam are in accordance with human nature.
Therefore, there is a kind of ease present within them.

The meaning of “cutting from one’s honor” is that his dignity was violated, or such an action was done or such a word was said that would affect his honor.

Seeking treatment for illness is also among the permissible means.
There is no harm in adopting them.

A cure exists for every disease.
It depends on a person’s effort, understanding, and attention that the patient understands the illness and selects the appropriate medicine.

After childhood comes youth, and after youth comes old age—this is a permanent system established by Allah.
Therefore, it inevitably comes at its appointed time.
A person should perform good deeds before being deprived of the strengths of youth,
so that he does not feel regret and remorse in old age.

Good character is such a quality of a person
that benefits him both in this world and in the Hereafter; therefore, it is a great favor from Allah.

Explanation:
1:
It is understood from this that along with illness, the Lord of all worlds has also arranged for medicine and treatment. However, old age is such an ailment for which there is no cure. This is why the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) also used to seek refuge from it. It is also understood from this that seeking treatment and medical care is permissible, and searching for means of cure for an illness is allowed.

Benefits and Issues:
➊ The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) encouraged seeking treatment. Undergoing or administering treatment is not contrary to reliance upon Allah (tawakkul), and the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) himself also sought treatment.
➋ Old age is a natural stage of life in which one’s faculties become weakened. If old age sets in, it cannot be reversed. A person should use medicines when needed so that he does not become completely incapacitated.
➌ The noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum) would sit in the gatherings of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) with utmost tranquility, and this is the etiquette for students of knowledge: that they should sit before their teachers with respect and good manners.
