1؎: By "standing water" is meant water that does not flow like the water of a river or stream, such as the water of a pit, lake, or pond. It is prohibited to urinate in such water, so defecating in it is even more strongly prohibited. The reason for this prohibition is that standing water naturally develops staleness and becomes malodorous; if further impurity and filth are added to it, this water will become even more foul-smelling, and its stench will cause harm to the people living nearby, disrupt public health, and pollute the environment.
Explanation & Benefits
Maulana Ataullah Sajid
Commentary: (1) By "standing water" is meant water in a pond or similar body that is not flowing. If people continue to urinate in such water, it will become extremely filthy and unfit for use.
(2) From this it is understood that if the water is flowing, such as the water of a stream, canal, or river, then urinating in it is not prohibited; however, it is better to avoid it. Because this is contrary to cleanliness and purity.

It was narrated from Jabir that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) forbade urinating into standing water.
Hafiz Muhammad Ameen
35. Commentary: If one urinates in stagnant water, then that impurity will also remain with the water. This will cause foulness and bad odor to develop. If more people urinate, the color, smell, and taste of the water can also change, due to which the water will become impure and no longer usable. These concerns do not exist with running water; therefore, in cases of extreme necessity, urinating in running water is permissible.
