Hadith 3426

´It was narrated that Ibn ‘Abbas said:` “The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was brought some milk. On his right was Ibn ‘Abbas and on his left was Khalid bin Walid. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said to Ibn ‘Abbas: ‘Will you permit me to give Khalid to drink?’ Ibn ‘Abbas said: ‘I would not like to give preference to anyone over myself when it comes to the leftover drink of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). So Ibn ‘Abbas took it and drank some, then Khalid drank some.”

Explanation & Benefits
Maulana Ataullah Sajid
Benefits and Issues:
➊ In every good deed, the right side is given preference over the left side.

➋ The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) expressed the desire to give his blessed remnant (tabarruk) to Khalid (radi Allahu anhu); in this, the respect for the elder person was taken into consideration.

➌ For this very purpose, permission was sought from Ibn Abbas (radi Allahu anhuma) because it was his right. Therefore, it was not appropriate to give it to anyone without his permission. Also, this expresses compassion towards children and concern for their protection.

➍ When an opportunity for honor is available, one should take advantage of it. However, one should not adopt such a manner that others feel belittled.

➎ According to our esteemed researcher, this hadith is authentic even without the mention of Ibn Abbas (radi Allahu anhuma) and Khalid bin Walid (radi Allahu anhu).
