Hadith 3423

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الصَّبَّاحِ , أَنْبَأَنَا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ , عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ يَزِيدَ بْنِ جَابِرٍ , عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي عَمْرَةَ , عَنْ جَدَّةٍ لَهُ يُقَالُ لَهَا كَبْشَةُ الْأَنْصَارِيَّةُ , أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " دَخَلَ عَلَيْهَا وَعِنْدَهَا قِرْبَةٌ مُعَلَّقَةٌ , فَشَرِبَ مِنْهَا وَهُوَ قَائِمٌ " , فَقَطَعَتْ فَمَ الْقِرْبَةِ , تَبْتَغِي بَرَكَةَ مَوْضِعِ فِي رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ .
It was narrated from ‘Abdur-Rahman bin Abi ‘Amrah, from a grandmother of his who was called Kabshah Al-Ansariyyah, that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) entered upon her, and there was a water skin hanging there. He drank from it while standing, and she cut off the mouth of the water skin, seeking the blessing of the place where the mouth of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) had been.

Benefits and Issues:
It is permissible to preserve items that have touched the blessed body of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) as a means of seeking blessing (tabarruk).
This practice is not correct with regard to anyone else. The Companions (radi Allahu anhum ajma'in) and the Followers (tabi'in, rahimahumullah) did not preserve the relics of Companions such as Abu Bakr and Umar (radi Allahu anhum ajma'in) for the purpose of seeking blessing (tabarruk).

Benefit:
It is established from this hadith that at times it is permissible to drink water while standing, and the ahadith in which there is prohibition are to be understood as indicating dislike (makruh), meaning that drinking water while standing is contrary to what is preferable (khilaf awla).
