1؎: Naqir: a wooden vessel; Muzaffat: an oiled vessel; Dabba’: a vessel made from a gourd; Hantamah: a green oiled jug. Wine used to be made in these vessels. The prohibition of making nabidh (date-infused drink) in them was due to the concern that the nabidh might become strong (fermented), and someone might drink it, or that seeing these vessels might arouse the desire to drink wine.
Explanation & Benefits
Maulana Ataullah Sajid
Benefits and Issues:
➊ The Arabs used to make wine in these vessels. Therefore, in the beginning, making nabidh in them was also prohibited so that the desire for wine would not arise again.
➋ Blocking the means (sadd al-dhara’i) is an important and necessary law in Islam, meaning that if there is a risk that a permissible act may lead to something forbidden, then even that permissible act should be avoided.
➌ Making nabidh in these vessels was also prohibited because there is a danger that the drink kept in them would quickly become intoxicating.
➍ A gourd or a similar vegetable (for example, pumpkin), when it remains on the vine and ripens and dries, can be used like a vessel. This is what is meant by a vessel made from a gourd.
➎ If a clay vessel is coated with tar, or if it is oiled, its pores become sealed. Because of this, it becomes different from an ordinary clay vessel, and nabidh in it quickly turns into wine. Therefore, these were prohibited.
