حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو النُّعْمَانِ ، حَدَّثَنَا مَهْدِيُّ بْنُ مَيْمُونٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَبِي يَعْقُوبَ ، عَنْ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ جَعْفَرٍ ، قَالَ : " كَانَ أَحَبَّ مَا اسْتَتَرَ بِهِ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لِحَاجَتِهِ هَدَفٌ ، أَوْ حَائِشُ نَخْلٍ " .
´It was narrated that 'Abdullah bin Ja'far said:` "The thing that the Prophet most liked to conceal himself behind when relieving himself was a hillock or a stand of date-palm trees."

Explanation & Benefits
Maulana Ataullah Sajid
It is permissible to relieve oneself behind a tree as a screen, provided that the tree is not a fruit-bearing one. The fruit of the date palm is harvested in a specific season; therefore, in other seasons, there is no need for people to approach it to obtain its fruit. The shade of a date grove is indeed utilized for benefit. Individually planted trees are not generally considered important for this purpose; however, small trees that have not yet reached fruit-bearing age provide a good screen.

Muslim — Hadith 774
'Abdullah bin Ja'far reported: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) one day made me mount behind him and he confided to me something secret which I would not disclose to anybody; and the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) liked the concealment provided by a lofty place or cluster of dates (while answering the call of nature), Ibn Asma' said in his narration: It implied an enclosure of the date-trees.

Ibn Khuzaymah — Hadith 53
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Ja'far (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) liked to conceal himself behind a mound or a cluster of date palms when relieving himself. Imam Abu Bakr (may Allah have mercy on him) says: I heard Muhammad bin Aban saying (he says): I heard Ibn Idris saying, I asked Shu'bah, "What do you say about Mahdi bin Maymun?" He replied, "(He is) trustworthy (narrator)." I said, "He narrated to me from Salm Alawi, who says: I saw Aban bin Abu Ayyash writing on a tablet in the presence of Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him)." Mahdi says: Salm Alawi is the one who used to sight the moon before the people. Imam Abu Bakr (may Allah have mercy on him) says: Muhammad bin Abu Ya'qub is Muhammad bin Allah bin Abu Ya'qub. He (Muhammad) is attributed to his grandfather (Abu Ya'qub), meaning instead of calling him Muhammad bin Abdullah, he is called Muhammad bin Abu Ya'qub. Shu'bah says about his (grandfather): Muhammad bin Abu Ya'qub narrated to me, who is the chief of Banu Tamim (i.e., Abu Ya'qub).

Benefits:

➊ At the time of relieving oneself, it is a recommended (mustahabb) act and an emphasized Sunnah (sunnah mu’akkadah) to conceal oneself behind trees or an elevated place to such an extent, or to obtain such covering in a low-lying area, that the entire body of the person is hidden from the sight of people.
