حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ , وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الصَّبَّاحِ , قَالَا : حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ الْأَصْبَهَانِيِّ , عَنْ سُهَيْلٍ , عَنْ أَبِيهِ , عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ , قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " مُدْمِنُ الْخَمْرِ كَعَابِدِ وَثَنٍ " .
´It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:` “The one who is addicted to wine is like one who worships idols.”
Brief Explanation
1؎: Although idol worship is shirk (associating partners with Allah), and shirk is the greatest of all sins, yet drinking wine (alcohol) is also such a sin that if it is committed persistently, it becomes like shirk—just as a minor sin (saghirah) becomes a major sin (kabirah) if done continuously. There is a warning in this for those who drink alcohol, lest their end be evil.
