Hadith 337

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَشَّارٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْمَلِكِ بْنُ الصَّبَّاحِ ، حَدَّثَنَا ثَوْرُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ ، عَنْ حُصَيْنٍ الْحِمْيَرِيِّ ، عَنْ أَبِي سَعْدِ الْخَيْرِ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ : " مَنِ اسْتَجْمَرَ فَلْيُوتِرْ مَنْ فَعَلَ ذَلِكَ فَقَدْ أَحْسَنَ ، وَمَنْ لَا فَلَا حَرَجَ ، وَمَنْ تَخَلَّلَ فَلْيَلْفِظْ ، وَمَنْ لَاكَ فَلْيَبْتَلِعْ ، مَنْ فَعَلَ ذَاكَ فَقَدْ أَحْسَنَ ، وَمَنْ لَا فَلَا حَرَجَ ، وَمَنْ أَتَى الْخَلَاءَ فَلْيَسْتَتِرْ ، فَإِنْ لَمْ يَجِدْ إِلَّا كَثِيبًا مِنْ رَمْلٍ فَلْيَمْدُدْهُ عَلَيْهِ ، فَإِنَّ الشَّيْطَانَ يَلْعَبُ بِمَقَاعِدِ ابْنِ آدَمَ ، مَنْ فَعَلَ فَقَدْ أَحْسَنَ ، وَمَنْ لَا فَلَا حَرَجَ " .
´It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that:` The Prophet said: "Whoever uses stones to clean himself, let him use an odd number of stones. Whoever does that has done well, and whoever does not, there is no harm in it. Whoever uses a tooth stick should spit out (whatever he removes) and whoever removes (the particle of food) by dislodging it with his tongue should swallow it. Whoever does that has done well, and whoever does not, tere is no harm in it. Whoever goes to the toilet should conceal himself, and if he cannot find anything except a pile of sand (behind which to conceal himself), then he should use that, for the Shaitan plays with the backside of the son of Adam. Whoever does that has done well, and whoever does not, there is no harm in it."

Hadith Takhrij «سنن ابی داود/الطہارة 19 ( 35 ) ، ( تحفة الأشراف : 14938 ) ، وقد أخرجہ : مسند احمد ( 2/371 ) ، سنن الدارمی/الطہارة 5 ( 689 ) ( ضعیف ) » ( سند میں حصین حمیری اور ابو سعد الخیر مجہول ہیں ، اس لئے یہ حدیث ضعیف ہے ، لیکن «من استجمر فليوتر» کا جملہ صحیح ہے ، یہ حدیث آگے ( 3498 ) پر بھی آ رہی ہے ، نیز ملاحظہ ہو : سلسلة الاحادیث الضعیفة ، للالبانی : 1028 )

Explanation & Benefits
Abu Dawud — Hadith 35
Narrated Abu Hurairah: The Prophet ﷺ said: If anyone applies collyrium, he should do it an odd number of times. If he does so, he has done well; but if not, there is no harm. If anyone cleanses himself with pebbles, he should use an odd number. If he does so, he has done well; but if not, there is no harm. If anyone eats, he should throw away what he removes with a toothpick and swallow what sticks to his tongue. If he does so, he has done well; if not, there is no harm. If anyone goes to relieve himself, he should conceal himself, and if all he can do is to collect a heap of send, he should sit with his back to it, for the devil makes sport with the posteriors of the children of Adam. If he does so, he has done well; but if not, there is no harm.

This narration is weak. The matters within it that are established by other ahadith are actionable. It is not necessary to act upon the other matters.

Musnad Humaydi — Hadith 987
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When a person uses pebbles (for cleaning), he should use an odd number, and when a person cleans his nose, he should do so an odd number of times."

From this hadith, it is understood that we should perform every action mentioned in the hadith an odd number of times.
