´Safinah, Abu ‘Abdur-Rahman, narrated that a man visited ‘Ali bin Abu Talib and he made some food for him.* Fatimah said:` “Why don’t we invite the Prophet (ﷺ) to eat with us?” So they invited him and he came. He put his hand on the doorpost of the house and saw a thin curtain in the corner of the house, so he went back. Fatimah said to ‘Ali: “Go and catch up with him, and ask him: ‘What made you go back, O Messenger of Allah?” He said: “I do not enter a well-decorated house.”

Explanation & Benefits
Maulana Ataullah Sajid
Benefits and Issues:
➊ Inviting others to a meal and accepting an invitation are part of good character.
➋ By "curtain" is meant the cloth that is hung in the house for adornment. A cloth hung on a door or window so that no one from outside can see inside is desirable.
➌ Simplicity is required by the Shari‘ah. One should avoid unnecessary formalities.
➍ It is appropriate to immediately point out something inappropriate when it appears, provided there is no wisdom in delaying it.
➎ If the host commits an unlawful act, it is permissible to leave without eating; however, if he rectifies his mistake, then one should not leave.

Benefits and Issues:
➊
To adorn the walls of homes with unnecessary, colorful, and decorated curtains and the like is contrary to Islamic culture.
➋
Similarly, it is not permissible to participate in any gathering in which an un-Islamic act is committed. This is especially the case for those personalities who are considered reliable by the public in matters of Shariah. Their participation, and then their silence over the wrongdoings, can in a sense be considered as approval. This is a major flaw in their regard.
➌
Likewise, homes whose very construction is for the purpose of wrongdoing, immorality, and un-Islamic activities—it is forbidden to go there.
