1؎ : That is, for three consecutive days, wheat bread was never available to him (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) in such a way that he could eat to his fill. Every day, or rather, if on one day he ate wheat bread, then on the next day barley bread was available, and even then, it was never to the extent of eating to his fill. In short, his entire life was spent in hardship and poverty. Subhan Allah! This is true poverty in sovereignty.
Narrated Abu Huraira: that he passed by a group of people in front of whom there was a roasted sheep. They invited him but he refused to eat and said, "Allah's Apostle left this world without satisfying his hunger even with barley bread."

Hadith Commentary:
Abu Hurairah (radi Allahu anhu), recalling the condition of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), did not find it agreeable to eat this food. And since this was not a wedding feast (walimah) invitation, accepting it was also not obligatory.

Hadith Commentary: (1) Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu reflected upon the extent of hardship in the worldly livelihood of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam and the noble Companions radi Allahu anhum. Therefore, he refused to eat the roasted goat, and recalling the condition of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, he did not find it agreeable to eat it. (2) Since this was not a wedding feast (walimah), accepting this invitation was not obligatory, because it is prohibited to refuse a wedding feast invitation without a valid reason.
