1؎: That is, they would pick out and eat the good dates from it. In the narration of Abu Dawud, it is further mentioned that the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) would remove worms and insects from it. In another narration, he forbade sorting the dates, and this is interpreted as applying to the situation when the dates are fresh, for at that time there is no need to sort them.

Narrated Anas ibn Malik: When the Prophet ﷺ was brought some old dates, he began to examine them and remove the worms from them.

Benefits and Issues: Benefit: If the first letter "seen" in "soos" is read with a fatḥah (zabar), then it will be a verbal noun (masdar). By this is meant a date or grain that has been infested by a worm or the like. If the first "seen" is read with a ḍammah (pesh), then it refers to the worm itself or a similar small creature. The meaning is that the date or grain does not become impure (najis) due to being infested by a worm or the like. And as much as possible, it should be cleaned and then used. In this, the humility (tawadu‘) of the Noble Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) is also mentioned, that there was no arrogance in him.
