Hadith 3332

It was narrated from Sa’d, the freed slave of Abu Bakr – and Sa’d used to serve the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and he liked this Hadith – that the Prophet (ﷺ) forbade eating two dates at once.

Explanation & Benefits
Maulana Ataullah Sajid
Benefits and Issues:
➊ When other companions are eating one date each, it appears improper for one person to take two dates at a time, because outwardly this seems to indicate gluttony or a habit of greed.

➋ It is possible that one person is hungrier, or the companions are close friends who do not find such a thing objectionable; in that case, taking two dates at a time would also be permissible.

➌ During eating, one should avoid any action that may be unpleasant to the companions.

➍ In Musnad Ahmad, instead of «حدیثة», the wording is «خدمته », meaning that the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) liked the service of Sa'd (radi Allahu anhu).
