Hadith 3329

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الصَّبَّاحِ , وَيَعْقُوبُ بْنُ حُمَيْدِ بْنِ كَاسِبٍ , قَالَا : حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ , أَخْبَرَنِي سُهَيْلُ بْنُ أَبِي صَالِحٍ , عَنْ أَبِيهِ , عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ , أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ , كَانَ إِذَا أُتِيَ بِأَوَّلِ الثَّمَرَةِ , قَالَ : " اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَنَا فِي مَدِينَتِنَا , وَفِي ثِمَارِنَا , وَفِي مُدِّنَا , وَفِي صَاعِنَا بَرَكَةً مَعَ بَرَكَةٍ " , ثُمَّ يُنَاوِلُهُ أَصْغَرَ مَنْ بِحَضْرَتِهِ مِنَ الْوِلْدَانِ .
´It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that when the first fruits (of the season) were brought, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) would say:` “O Allah, bless us in our city and in our fruits, in our Mudd and in our Sa’,* blessing upon blessing.” Then he would give it to the smallest of the children present.

Benefits and Issues:
(1)
The first fruit of the orchard should be presented to a respected personality.
In this, there is both an acknowledgment of that person's eminence and an expression of love for them.

(2)
Elders should supplicate for the well-being of the young on every appropriate occasion.

(3)
By giving food and drink to children, love for elders is instilled in the hearts of the children.

Hadith Commentary: Benefits and Issues: The meaning of blessing in Madinah is that it remains well-inhabited and prosperous, and that Allah’s grace and bounty descend upon its residents. The blessing in its fruits and produce means that the fruits and crops are abundant, i.e., the harvest is plentiful. In the Noble Qur’an, there is mention of the supplication of Ibrahim (alayhis salam) which he made when he was leaving his wife and infant child in the barren and waterless valley of Makkah: “O Allah! Instill love and affection for them in the hearts of Your servants, and provide them with sustenance and fruits as per their needs, and make it a region of safety and security” (: Surah al-Baqarah, Surah Ibrahim).

The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), by mentioning this supplication as an example, made the same supplication to Allah with an additional request. The result of this supplication is that sustenance and fruits from all over the world reach Madinah just as they do Makkah, and all those believing servants who love Makkah also have love and affection for Madinah. And in this belovedness, Madinah’s share surpasses that of Makkah. Furthermore, in this supplication, the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) referred to Ibrahim (alayhis salam) as Allah’s servant, His close friend (khaleel), and His prophet, but referred to himself only as servant and prophet, not mentioning being a khaleel. This humility and self-effacement is part of the noble character of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).

Then, in relation to the new fruit (the first fruit of the season) and the young child, he (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) would give it to the child to teach the lesson that on such occasions, innocent young children should be given precedence, for they become happy even with a small gift.

Explanation:
1:
O Allah! Bless our fruits for us,
and bless our city for us,
bless our sa‘ (a measure) for us,
bless our mudd (a smaller measure) for us.
O Allah! Ibrahim (alayhis salam) is Your servant,
Your friend, and Your prophet,
and I am also Your servant and Your prophet.
He prayed to You for Makkah,
and I pray to You for Madinah,
with a supplication similar to the one Ibrahim (alayhis salam) made for Makkah,
rather, grant it double the blessing.
