Hadith 3328

´It was narrated from ‘Ubaidullah bin Abu Rafi’, from his grandmother Salma, that the Prophet (ﷺ) said:` “A house in which there are no dates is like a house in which there is no food.”

Explanation & Benefits

Benefits and Issues:
➊ Dates possess complete nutritional benefits. In their presence, even if no other food item is available, one can subsist on them.

➋ During the harvest season of a crop, it is permissible to purchase and store a food item for the needs of the entire year. The prohibited form of hoarding is when people are in need of something and a trader, instead of selling it, stores it away so that the price increases further.

➌ This contains a lesson in contentment: when dates are available, what is the need to accumulate various other items?
