´It was narrated that ‘Aishah said:` “My mother was trying to fatten me up when she wanted to send me to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) (when she got married), but nothing worked until I ate cucumbers with dates; then I grew plump like the best kind of plump.”
Explanation & Benefits
Maulana Ataullah Sajid
Benefits and Issues:
➊ Qiththa’ refers to cucumber (in Punjabi: ت) as well as to melon. Muhammad Fuad Abdul Baqi has also mentioned both meanings: khiyar (cucumber) and ‘ajoor (melon). See: Footnote (Sahih Muslim, The Book of Drinks, Chapter: Eating Qiththa’ with Fresh Dates, Hadith: 2043). Allamah Waheed uz-Zaman Khan and Mawlana Abdul Hakim Khan Akhtar Shah Jahanpuri have both taken “melon” as the intended meaning in this hadith.
➋ Before her marriage, Aisha radi Allahu anha was very thin, and her mother wished that her stature would become such that she would appear more pleasing to the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.
➌ For the service of her husband, it is good for a wife to take care of her health.
➍ According to the principles of Eastern medicine, melon has a cold effect and dates have a hot effect. By eating both together, their effects become balanced, so there is no fear of harm.
