´It was narrated that Anas bin Malik – a man from the tribe of Banu ‘Abdul-Ashhal – said:` * “I came to the Prophet (ﷺ) when he was eating breakfast and he said: ‘Come and eat.’ I said: ‘I am fasting. Alas! Would that I had eaten of the food of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ).’”

Explanation & Benefits
Maulana Ataullah Sajid
Benefits and Issues:

The narrator of this narration is not that Anas ibn Malik who was the special servant of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) and the son of Umm Sulaym (radi Allahu anha), rather, this is another Companion. Therefore, the narrator has clarified that his affiliation is with the tribe of Banu Abd al-Ashhal.

If a fasting person is invited to a meal, it is better to break a voluntary (nafl) fast and accept the invitation; however, it is also permissible to complete the fast.

If, upon being invited to a meal, the other person apologizes, one should not insist excessively.

Eating with the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) is a tremendous honor, the missing of which caused the Companion to feel regret later, because the fast could have been observed at another time. Due to residing in another area, he did not get another opportunity to attain this honor.
