Hadith 3248

حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ الْأَزْهَرِ النَّيْسَابُورِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا الْهَيْثَمُ بْنُ جَمِيلٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا شَرِيكٌ ، عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ عُرْوَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ ابْنِ عُمَرَ ، قَالَ : " مَنْ يَأْكُلُ الْغُرَابَ ، وَقَدْ سَمَّاهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَاسِقًا ، وَاللَّهِ مَا هُوَ مِنَ الطَّيِّبَاتِ " .
´It was narrated that Ibn ‘Umar said:` “Who eats crows? The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) called them vermin, By Allah, they are not from among the good and permissible things.”

Benefits and Issues:


In the hadith, the following creatures are described as “fasiq” (vicious or harmful):
the snake, the scorpion, the rat, the kite (a type of bird of prey), and the biting dog. (Sahih Muslim, Chapter: What is recommended for the muhrim and others to kill of vermin in the sacred and non-sacred precincts, Hadith: 1198)


The crow referred to here is the one that has white coloring on its back and belly.
In the hadith, it is called “al-ghurab al-abqa‘.” (Sahih Muslim, reference as above)


Those creatures which have been commanded to be killed are unlawful (haram), because if they were lawful (halal), they would be slaughtered (dhabh) rather than simply killed.
