Commentary:
In this hadith, drinking water while standing has been prohibited.
Some scholars interpret this prohibition as being for detestability (tanzih), meaning that drinking water while standing is permissible, but not preferable, because it is established from hadiths that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) also drank water while standing.
Some other scholars do not consider it permissible, because in Sahih Muslim there is this Prophetic statement:
(LA YASHRABANNA AHADUN MINKUM QĀ’IMAN, FAMAN NASIYA FAL-YASTAQI) (Sahih Muslim, Al-Ashribah, Chapter: On Drinking While Standing, Hadith: 2026)
“None of you should drink (water or the like) while standing, and whoever forgets and does so should vomit it out.”
From this, it is understood that permissibility should be restricted to a situation of necessity, i.e., if there is no suitable place to sit, then one may drink water while standing.
Otherwise, one should abstain. And Allah knows best.
