´It was narrated from Ibn ‘Abbas:` “And certainly, the Shayatin (devils) do inspire their friends (from mankind).” [6:121] He said: “They used to say: ‘Whatever the Name of Allah has been mentioned over, do not eat it, and whatever the Name of Allah has not been mentioned over, eat it.’ Then Allah said: “Eat not of that over which Allah’s Name has not been pronounced.’” [6:121]

Benefits and Issues:
➊
This too was one of the erroneous customs of the Age of Ignorance (Jahiliyyah): they used to eat the slaughtered animal over which a name other than Allah’s was invoked.
And they would also eat the meat of that animal over which Allah’s name was deliberately not mentioned.
And they considered this to be a religious ruling.
Allah the Exalted said:
“And there are some cattle over which they do not mention Allah’s name, fabricating a lie against Him.”
➋
Among the reasons for the revelation (shaan al-nuzool) of this blessed verse is also narrated that the polytheists used to say:
The Muslims eat the animal they themselves have killed (slaughtered),
but do not eat the animal killed by Allah (i.e., carrion).
Allah the Exalted revealed this verse in response to them.
And, instructing the Muslims to avoid the doubts created by them (the polytheists), He said:
“If you obey them, you will surely be polytheists.”
(Jami‘ al-Tirmidhi, Tafsir, (Chapter)
And from Surah al-An‘am, Hadith: 3-29)
➌
It is necessary to mention Allah’s name at the time of slaughtering.
➍
Regarding a Muslim, it is outwardly assumed that he has slaughtered by mentioning Allah’s name, for example:
If one has seen him slaughtering himself, or a trustworthy Muslim has witnessed it, then the animal slaughtered by a person from the People of the Book is also permissible.
The slaughtered animal of other non-Muslims (Hindus, Buddhists, Zoroastrians, etc.)
is not permissible.

Our esteemed researcher has declared the aforementioned narration weak in its chain of transmission, while some other scholars have declared it authentic. See: (Sahih Sunan Abi Dawud, (Detailed)
